Our Clinic

Individual Counseling

Individual therapy refers to therapy sessions with one client and one therapist. Individual sessions with a therapist average about 45 minutes to one hours. During your first visit, an evaluation will take place, which is approximately 60 minutes. You and your therapist will determine your treatment goals. After the evaluation and treatment goal collaboration, your therapist will have customized a plan of action and may recommend follow-up visits which are usually weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your needs. In addition, a combination of additional services maybe recommended, including group therapy, family therapy, Psychosocial Rehabilitative Services or Basic Skills Training.

Every therapeutic experience is unique, and we encourage you to remain an active participate with your clinician. However, if the decision is to terminate, which you have the right to do so at any time, we ask that you please bring any concerns to the attention of you therapist or our Clinical Director before you depart.

Marriage & Family Counseling

Nearly 50% of marriages in the United States end in divorce. Not only does this have an impact on the couples, it also has a profound impact on any children that were the result of the union. Children involved in the divorce, or separation, will often be angry, confused, hurt and guilty.

Marriage and family counselors will act as an unbiased third party, allowing each individual in a marriage or family state their “side,” or point of view. While one person is speaking, the others involved in the counseling are encouraged to let them state their concerns. If they have anything to interject, they are to wait until it is "their turn" to do so. Also, when speaking, individuals must be courteous and respectful of other family members. For instance, family members should refrain from name calling, yelling, and blaming. They should also be ready and willing to admit their own faults as well.

After the evaluation and treatment goal collaboration, your therapist will have customized a plan of action for your family and may recommend follow-up visits which are usually weekly or bi-weekly, depending on the needs of your family. In addition, a combination of additional services maybe recommended, including individual therapy, group therapy, Psychosocial Rehabilitative Services or Basic Skills Training.

Every therapeutic experience is unique, and we encourage you to remain an active participate with your clinician. Case Management

· Need help with housing
· Need help finding a job
· I want to go back to school and get my GED
· My car is constantly breaking down and I am in need of transportation

If these are some of your concerns and needs, then a referral to our case management program maybe of assistance to you.

Case management is a multi-step process to ensure timely access to and coordination of medical and psychosocial services for our clients, and in some models, his or her family/close support system. Case management includes the following processes: intake, assessment of needs, service planning, service plan implementation, service coordination, monitoring and follow-up, reassessment, case conferencing, crisis intervention, and case closure.

Case management activities are diverse. In addition to assisting clients to access and maintain specific services, case management activities may include negotiation and advocacy for services, consultation with providers, navigation through the service system, psycho-social support, supportive counseling, and general client education.

The goal of case management is to promote and support independence and self-sufficiency. As such, the case management process requires the consent and active participation of the client in decision-making, and supports a client's right to privacy, confidentiality, self-determination, dignity and respect, nondiscrimination, compassionate non-judgmental care, a culturally competent provider, and quality case management services.

Trauma Drama for Teens

Trauma Drama, a theater-based therapy program for teenagers with severe emotional and behavioral problems. The idea is that theater can help this group of troubled adolescents regulate their emotions and build skills to cope with trauma.

What is Trauma Drama? Trauma Drama is an evidence-informed, innovative approach to tertiary prevention and clinical intervention for vulnerable youth exposed with histories of exposure to familial and community violence; school bullying, intolerance and hate crimes; maltreatment or neglect; and disrupted caregiving and other chronic life adversity. Trauma Drama uniquely synthesizes elements of improvisational theater and cooperative play into a therapeutic framework grounded in the six core components of complex trauma intervention: promotion of safety; self-regulation; healthy attachments; identity-development; self-worth, esteem and competency; and integration of trauma and adversity experiences into a meaningful and forward-looking life narrative. Guiding by the principle of transformative action, Trauma Drama immerses youth in vivid and poignant “as-if” activities and theatrical skits with peers and adult troupe members that seek to provide an optimal balance of challenge and opportunity to promote self-expression, cognitive flexibility, creative problem solving, “in vivo” conflict resolution skills, and above all, an embodied sense of personal agency and mastery.

What is the Structure of Trauma Drama? Trauma Drama is a group-based therapeutic program for youth and young adults aged 12-22 that can be delivered in school and after settings as well as outpatient clinic, community-based or residential treatment settings. The intervention is conducted by dynamic and highly trained teams of therapists, actors and educators all cross-trained to deliver this fully experiential curriculum. The standard Trauma Drama sequence consists of 18 to 24 sessions that take youth on a healing, three-phase arc that begins with the establishment of trust, self-regulation, social rhythm and interpersonal attunement skills. Upon this foundation the curriculum next moves into the examination of challenging themes related to violence and trauma. The final phase of the curriculum invites participants to transcend life adversity and embrace themes of personal mastery, future vision and community. Shorter introductory versions of the model include a 6-session self-regulation, teamwork and competency building sequence and a 1-session introductory assembly. The ideal group size varies depending on the age, developmental stage, vulnerabilities and talents of participating youth, but typically ranges from 12-25 students. Smaller group adaptations (6-8 youth) in clinical settings, such at Matters of the Mind, LLC.

This program is offered at our Las Vegas and Laughlin locations. For additional information, call (302) 387-9785 or contact us at [email protected] to get connected with a Matters of the Mind Specialist. We would love to bring this program to your local school!

Psychological Testing & Assessment
Psychological testing is not a single test or even a single type of test. It encompasses a whole body of dozens of research-backed tests and procedures of assessing specific aspects of a person’s psychological makeup. Some tests are used to determine IQ, others are used for personality, and still others for something else. Since so many different tests are available, it’s important to note that not all of them share the same research evidence for their use — some tests have a strong evidence base while others do not. Psychological assessment is something that’s typically done in a formal manner only by trained clinician. Depending upon what kind of testing is being done, it can last anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to a full day. Testing is usually done in a psychologist’s office and consists largely of paper-and-pencil tests (nowadays often administered on a computer for ease-of-use). Psychological testing is divided into four primary types: Clinical Interview Assessment of Intellectual Functioning (IQ) Personality Assessment Behavioral Assessment In addition to these primary types of psychological assessment, other kinds of psychological tests are available for specific areas, such as aptitude or achievement in school, career or work counseling, management skills, and career planning. We offer Testing and Assessments for various areas, including: · Bariatric Surgery Pre-assessment · SSI Disability Testing · Testing to support IEP determinations · ADHD evaluations for diagnosis · Neuropsychological Testing · Malingering and Court ordered evaluations These services are offered at our Las Vegas and Laughlin locations. Anger Management

Matters of the Mind offers a Teen Anger Management Program and Adult Anger Management Program

Anger, like all emotions, can be managed. People who struggle with anger and other behaviorally related issues are commonly misperceived as “bad” or as being a problem. At Matters of the Mind, it is our belief that all people are valuable and unique and should be treated with dignity and respect. Anger is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences throughout their life.

The challenge with anger is finding a way to express it in a way that doesn't make others want to shut down or become defensive or scared. Angry words and emotions can be scary to others, especially when they are expressed in a raw, loud manner. An angry person is also a person who is less able to hear and react to others in an empathetic, helpful way. Instead, when we're angry, we tend to shut down, put our defenses up, and answer back in a way that can be hurtful or uncaring. We give an emotional response that is not filtered with reason or rationality.

Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence and Codependency

Regaining self-esteem can free one from both Codependency and Abuse because we have decided to no longer take part in the Abused-Abuser Cycle.

Comprehending Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence becomes a “Codependent Partnership' between Abused and Abuser when it’s allowed to continue. The definition of domestic violence has been specifically outlined by our government as follows: “A pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.”

Domestic Violence and domestic abuse has very many faces as it expresses itself within the core of our family structure. It was for a long time commonly believed to be only a physical violence upon another family member, but it is currently recognized as a much larger societal problem that also includes psychological abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and even economic abuse.

Coming To Terms With Domestic Violence

The harsh reality is that Domestic Violence and Codependency always bring pain, grief, embarrassment, shame and even criminal charges into a home. In most cases negative consequences fall on both the perpetrator and victim of Domestic Violence. In addition, it is commonly understood that the cycles of Domestic Violence will only continue unless there is an intervention of some kind to break the repetitive cycle of this negative behavior. Better said, interventions into the domestic violence pattern have proven to be the most essential element in stopping the pain and the suffering experienced by all parties involved.

Addiction Recovery Services

Addiction Services include both chemical and behavioral addictions. Addictions present themselves in numerous ways and lead to serious impacts on individuals and their families. The dual-focused program encompasses a total of twelve (12) areas of addiction.

The first line of service in the program is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the addiction. More specialized evaluations are performed for individuals seeking to regain driver’s license privileges through a state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or those referred by the Department of Transportation (D.O.T) or Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A).

Once addiction recovery beings, Matters of the Mind’s specializes in treating not only the individual who is diagnosed with the addiction, but also the family members. Through individual, group and family therapy, information about the addiction course and prognosis is provided. Clients are assisted in the identification of triggers and patterns of use, followed by the development of alternative behaviors, coping skills and a relapse prevention plan. A referral to a 12 step based self-help group is strongly encouraged for all clients unless contraindicated. Each client is assisted in the establishment of a healthy support system to maintain the goal of abstinence from their addiction.

If the client has both an addiction problem and another mental health problem, the primary presenting problem (i.e. use of a mood-altering substance) is addressed first. Mental health issues become the secondary problem to be addressed once the addiction is managed, unless the behavioral addiction has manifested itself due to a mental health diagnosis. The expected minimal service outcome is that the client receives information, treatment and support to maintain abstinence, possess the skills to implement a relapse prevention plan, and to maximize his/her human resources.

Matters of the Mind offers addiction treatment in the forms of our three days per week Intensive Outpatient Program(IOP); five days per week Day Treatment Program; weekly day and evening Group Therapy, as well as scheduled Individual Therapy with those Clinicians who specialize in this form of treatment for both adolescents and adults.

Substance Abuse and Dependency Assessment

Matters of the Mind offers substance abuse assessments by individuals who have been specifically trained and credentialed with our agency to provide this service. The assessment is designed to be a comprehensive assessment concerning the individuals use, abuse and/or dependency on a substance. The assessment closely examines a person’s history of using substances and current involvement. Prior areas of addiction recovery are questioned and an assessment on the success of prior treatment is obtained, including involvement in self-help strategies. The assessment allows the examiner to make appropriate recommendations. Recommendations may include one or more of the follows: detoxification, residential, inpatient, outpatient counseling, and psychoeducation.

The evaluation is designed to serve as an official substance abuse assessment that may have been requested by: school districts, area courts, EAP’s and various employment settings, family members, and by other therapists in the community and within our own addiction recovery program. The examining therapist then provides results and specific recommendation in a client-centered approach for each client.

Department of Motor Vehicles’ License Assessment

Driving under influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated/impaired (DWI) is an offence committed when a driver operates a vehicle after the consumption of alcohol or drugs or other intoxicants. Increased alcohol levels in the driver's blood lead to diminished mental and motor reactions which, in turn, reduce the driver's ability to control the vehicle. This significantly increases the risk of the driver committing errors of judgment and often results in accidents causing severe injuries and even death.

Matters of the Mind offers substance abuse assessments for individuals attempting to have driving privileges restored following suspension or revocation for substance related offenses. A report is prepared in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, Driver’s License Appeals Division. Insurance does not cover this service. The fee for service must be paid in cash or credit card before the service is rendered. After securing a signed release of information from those clients requesting written verification be sent to court officials, those documents will be provided to the courts initially, as well as monthly progress compliance, as requested.

Certified Department of Transportation (D.O.T.)

This service is designed for employees of the Department of Transportation that have violated, or believed to have violated D.O.T rules regarding the use of substances. Therapists providing this service have had specialized training and have been certified by the D.O.T. Employees required to undergo assessment and/or addiction recovery are required to complete all recommendations before a return to duty can occur. The function of the therapist is to protect the public interest in safety by professionally evaluating the employee. After evaluation, education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare are outlined and planned. The therapist then provides the necessary referrals that will assist the employee in completion of all designated requirements. A face-to-face follow-up evaluation is required to determine that the employee has successfully complied with all recommendations and has made appropriate clinical progress. This service requires the individual to pay the entire fee for the evaluation prior to services being rendered. Payment must be made with cash or a credit card.
